Photograms- The Darkroom
Photograms are a process created in the darkroom. The above images were created my Man Ray, an American visual artist, he was a significant contributor to the DADA and surrealist movements which definitely link to the topic Fantastic and Strange.
We created our own versions of his work using a dark room. We took objects of various shapes and sizes and put them on a piece of photographic paper and then put the photographic paper under a light for 1 second so that the areas of the paper with no objects on would become over exposed. Then we put the paper in a developer solution for 2 minutes, then a stopper solution for 2 mins and then a fixer solution. The different objects produced different effects depending on the translucency of them, for example the kiwi had a nice effect when sliced thinly. We also used pipettes to put droplets of water on acetate and then sprinkled paint powder onto the droplets. Another object I used was an egg; it was very messy and didn't produce a great effect because I think I left the light on for too long.
